  • February/March 2010 Issue: Many communities in the region are filled with historic properties. A resource exists to help preserve or restore historic properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places or the Register of Historic Kansas Places. The Heritage Trust Fund (HTF) is a competitive grant program offered through the Kansas State Historical Society.

  • December 2009/January 2010 Issue: Two communities in North Central Kansas have received notice they will be receiving funding for projects. The City of Mankato will receive a KAN STEP grant of $300,000 to construct an addition to the city’s fire station building. The City of Abilene will receive $48,000 through the USDA Rural Development Housing Preservation Grant (HPG) Program.

  • October/November 2009 Issue: Kansas Department of Commerce announced in late July the awarding of nearly $13 million in federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to 44 Kansas communities.

  • August/September 2009 Issue: Kansas Department of Commerce announced in late July the awarding of nearly $13 million in federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to 44 Kansas communities. Four communities in North Central Kansas, including Cawker City, Glasco, Lincoln Center, and Salina, are among that list of new awardees. The $13 million included just over $4 million in stimulus dollars.

  • June/July 2009 Issue: FEDERAL STIMULUS BILL ALLOCATIONS BEGIN TO BE AVAILABLE IN STATE, AREA.
    The much talked about American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 is beginning to come to fruition as details of various allocations to State agencies are becoming more available. According to the website, www.recovery.gov, which contains an interactive map showing Federal agencies intent to make recovery act funding available, Kansas has received a $992 million Total Funding Notification Amount to date. The following table shows the funding announcements for Kansas available at printing time. Using the site as a tool, one can follow the Federal programs of interest as well as the progress and status of every state.

  • April/May 2009 Three high school seniors have been selected to receive cash awards for their work submitted as part of the Third Annual RuralVoices Youth Contest sponsored by the NCRPC.

    Several communities in the region that have been working toward long-term improvements received a boost when the Kansas Department of Commerce Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program announced its newest list of grantees.

    RAD Homes, LLC, opened an assisted living facility in Scandia in February. It operates under the name of Country Place Home Plus.

  • February/March 2009 Issue: Household Weatherization Program active, receiving more funds in 2009.
    The weatherization program, which was first initiated in 1979 with its purpose being to increase the energy efficiency of qualified residential housing, is still going strong. In fact, the NCRPC,which oversees the weatherization of housing in 33 Kansas counties, expects to have twice as much money to spend in the 2009-2010 program year as compared to this year, according to NCRPC Weatherization Director Margaret Cathey.

After 22 years of serving as the NCRPC Executive Director, John Cyr stepped down from his
leadership position effective March 31, 2008. Cyr began working at the NCRPC in September 1980 following completion of his graduate work in Geography at Kansas State University.

“The past 28 years have sped by and I am honored by the fact I have been allowed to serve as Executive
Director for 22 of those years,” Cyr says. “It has been a learning experience more than a job and for that I’m most grateful.”
