The City of Beattie, located in North Central Marshall County one mile north of U.S. Highway 36, made improvements to its sewage treatment lagoon system, thanks to help from a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Kansas Department of Commerce and a loan from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The city was awarded a grant in the amount of $183,162 January 2007 and took out a low-interest loan in the amount of $183,163 through the Kansas Wastewater Pollution Control Revolving Loan fund.
This project has allowed the city to construct an elevated third cell of approximately 1.4 acres at its sewage lagoon treatment facility, install a liftstation to serve that cell, construct 431 feet of 4-inch main and add 1,300 linear feet of fencing, and remove accumulative sludge from two existing cells.
The city’s old two-cell lagoon system, which was constructed in 1960, needed to be upgraded because it was no longer in compliance to meet the requirements for its Kansas Water Pollution Control Permit and Authorization to Discharge Permit.
Completion of this project will bring Beattie’s wastewater system into compliance with current design standards and permitting requirements. The project also has developed a three-cell sewage treatment facility capable of addressing the needs of 527 residents. That number includes the present population (277) plus any future population increase projected for the next 20 years.
