NCRPC maintains this resource to help communities and organizations discover potential funding sources, with each opportunity linking directly to the administering agency for current program information.

Foundation for Rural Service Community Grants

Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) in cooperation with NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association

Miscellaneous, Education and Childcare

Grant program designed to support local efforts to build and sustain a high quality of life in rural America. Grants are concentrated in four major areas including 1.) Business Development, 2.) Community Development, 3.) Education, and 4.) Telecommunications. Award amounts range from $250 to $5,000. The program is offered in cooperation with NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association and applications must go through the local telephone company. Check with your service provider to see if they are a member of NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association or the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) and if they participate in the grant program.

Good Sports Equipment Grants

Recreation and Health

Program provides athletic equipment, footwear, and apparel to disadvantaged young people nationwide. To be eligible, applicant must directly serve youth between the ages of 3-18 years old, serve youth in an economically disadvantaged area, and operate an organized sport, recreational activity, or fitness program that offers consistent and structured opportunity for play to large groups of children.

J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation, Inc.

The Foundation provides assistance to Christian religious organizations, charitable organizations, institutions of higher learning, hospitals and other organizations of a general charitable nature in the general categories of Educational, General, Health and Religious. Most of the Mabee Foundation grants are made toward building and facility construction and renovation projects and to the purchase of major medical equipment. Ordinarily, grants are made on a challenge or conditional basis to provide incentive for enlisting the support of other donors. Only the states of Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas are eligible.

Waste Tire Grants

Grants to Kansas local units of government and public & private schools to support the purchase of products made from recycled tires including playground cover. If awarded, the grant will pay up to 50% of the eligible cost in the awarded project; the match requirement is a minimum of 50%. Tire derived products eligible for the program include the following: pour-in-place rubber surface, loose fill rubber mulch, rubber tiles for unitary mat, molded or extruded rubber edging, or tables/benches.

It is geographically focused on assisting Kansas and Western Missouri counties with fewer than 50,000 residents. The emphasis is on providing financial and strategic guidance in healthcare, education, and rural resilience.

USDA Food and Nutrition Service

Education and Childcare, Recreation and Health

The Farm to School Grant Program provides support to incorporate local products into school meal programs, integrate agricultural education into the classroom, and cultivate and expand school gardens. School districts, State and local agencies, Indian tribal organizations, agricultural producers, and non-profit organizations are eligible.

Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG)

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Emergency Services/Law Enforcement

Grants to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments & nonaffiliated EMS organizations. Funding categories include Operations and Safety, Vehicle Acquisition, and Joint/Regional. Requires a local match based on population served (i.e. under 20,000 is 5% match). Maximum federal funding for a jurisdiction with 100,000 people or fewer shall not exceed $1,000,000.

Always check the funding agency's website or call for current deadlines or requirements.

Don't forget local resources, community foundations, utilities, etc.

Look for others in the region that have done similar projects and find out how their project was successful and what agencies, if any, provided funding assistance.
